Monkey Puzzle Tree Club at Shorne Woods Country Park

The Kent Cultural Baton has invited Bridgette Ashton to hold a special Monkey Puzzle planting ceremony in Shorne Woods Country Park, near Gravesend

The tiny Araucaria Araucana seedling will be introduced to an area of the forest which acknowledges and celebrates the woods’ close proximity to the A2 as well as the park’s ancient and contemporary histories. The sapling will become a future landmark of the park, as an ornamental mark of the exotic in the otherwise classic ‘Garden of England’ scenery.

At the same time, artists Jacob Cartwright & Nick Jordan will be making work inside the woods, celebrating its significance in Kent

Ashton's planting ceremony will form part of her ongoing Monkey Puzzle Tree Club project concerning the identification of clusters of Monkey Puzzle Trees across the country.  It will also contribute to her ongoing book project locating and photographing one hundred Monkey Puzzle trees in Kent. The tree planting event on Saturday 26th will be marked by the launch of an accompanying illustrated limited-edition zine book available for free to visitors on the day.
